Tuesday night, June 24, with Bill Knott:

The book of Acts has great value that is sometimes forgotten.   In Acts, the only book of history in the New Testament, we tend to focus on the power of Pentecost—cloves of fire, the gift of tongues and 3000 baptisms. But two-thirds of Acts is conflict, and, like it or not, conflict is an important experience in the development of church and mission.  Acts could be called “The Citizen’s Guide to the Powers that Be”--powers that persecute and oppress the new Christians. There’s even conflict between the powers within the church. Knott expounds on four points:

1. Conflict is the context of mission.

2. Courageous faith defends its civil rights.

3. Authentic faith demands bold language.

4. Anticipate the ongoing baptism of the Holy Spirit.

The Victor Collins Wall: Before Likes There Were Prints

Victor W. Collins, a Southern New England Conference (SNEC) pastor and the conference communication correspondent from 1977 to 1987, had a history of roaming camp meeting with a 35 mm camera, snapping mostly candid shots.

Every night he would develop roll after roll of film in a darkroom located in the basement of the conference office. The next day, his black-and-white 5x7 and 8x10 photos would appear on a board like this.  News travelled fast across camp meeting grounds.  The new pictures are up! On the final night of the camp meeting, all photos were free for the taking.

Much has changed in photography since then, but the joy of capturing and sharing camp meeting memories is the same.

Inspired by Victor Collins, Shawn Santana, assistant to the president for SNEC's communication and IT, with help from Norys Agudelo, HR assistant director, and Elias Zabala, photographer/videographer, created this photo board with the same intent. Each photo posted on the board was covered in a plastic sleeve for viewing only until Saturday night, when all photos were free for the taking.  Of course, this year’s camp meeting goers could also scan the QR code to access digital copies.

Thanks to Jeff Linthwaite for sharing this history.
