SNEC Outdoor School 2024: Fun in God’s Classroom

With bright sunshine and warm temperatures, October 3, 2024, was the perfect day for Southern New England Conference’s (SNEC) outdoor school for fifth and sixth graders in SNEC schools.  It was organized by SNEC’s associate superintendent for education, Brian Allison, and held at Camp Winnekeag.

All nine SNEC schools participated with a total of 110 students and 20 chaperones, not counting the Office of Education personnel.  Camp Winnekeag’s director, Tanna Allison, led out in worship, capturing the students’ attention with her Bible lesson featuring an orange, peeled and unpeeled.

Students enjoyed a variety of activities with several of the teachers, staff, and volunteers leading the activities.  Volunteer Merri Lynn Braman gave a presentation on Native American history with artifacts for the students to see.  Luisa Cabana, a volunteer tutor from Warren SDA school organized and led out in art. Jonathan Bissell, sixth grade teacher from South Lancaster Academy, and David Tejeda, a parent, oversaw canoeing on the lake, and Henrique de Oliveira, PE teacher for grades 5 to 12 at South Lancaster Academy, organized sports for the students. Animal Adventures Family Zoo and Rescue Center brought animals for the students to learn about and touch and hold.

Before this event, students took part in a competition to create the design for this year’s outdoor school t-shirt.  Students were asked to draw a picture representing the theme for the 2024 Outdoor school, "Fun in God's Classroom." The first-place prize winner, Taissa from Cedar Brook School, had her design printed on the t-shirt that outdoor school participants wore and received a $25 gift card. The second-place prize went to Julian from Wachusett Hills SDA School, who received a $15 gift card, and third place went to Ebenezer from Cedar Brook School, who received a $10 gift card.  Both second and third place winners also had their drawings printed on the congratulations' flyer.

This day of fun concluded with prayer before they traveled back to their respective schools.
