Serendipitous Singing: A Skit
.

Setting: The sanctuary in an SDA church somewhere in SNEC-land between Sabbath School and church. The congregation is singing.

Cast:     Song leader, pianist, congregation, and visitor.

SCRIPT:

Member of the congregation:  Can we try a new song? Number 363 really fits our Sabbath School lesson today but I’ve never heard it before. Could we sing it?

Songleader:  Well…I don’t know this hymn either. Does anyone know #363?

(Visitor in the congregation raises her hand, thinking that others will also raise their hands—but realizes hers is the only hand to go up.)

Songleader: Could you come up and help us learn this song?

Visitor: I’d be happy to!

(Visitor walks to the front thinking “My, this is an unexpected situation! A moment ago I was anonymous in the congregation. Now I’m up front!”)

(Pianist plays an introduction.)

(Visitor decides to use both her voice and her hands to lead hymn #363.)

(Congregation sings verse one.)

(Visitor sings a little quieter and stops directing with her hands.)

(Congregation sings verse two.)

(Visitor stops singing and listens as the congregation confidently finishes verse three.)

Members of the congregation comment enthusiastically: That’s a beautiful hymn! Why haven’t we sung it before?! The words are so meaningful! We need to sing #363 often!

(Visitor slips back to her seat, glowing inside from the serendipitous experience with a Singing Church.)

“Sing to the Lord a new song.” Isaiah 42:10

The skit above is the remembrance of an experience which took place at the Quinebaug SDA Church. If you don’t know hymn #363, why not check it out!
